Bern’s main train station, centrally located and well-connected, made for a quick and convenient arrival. After grabbing a cold drink, I set off toward the Marzilibahn to begin my adventure by the river.
Taking the Marzilibahn Down to the Aare
A unique way to reach the Aare River from the higher ground of Bern’s city center is the Marzilibahn, one of the shortest funicular railways in Europe. The Marzilibahn, operational since 1885, takes just over a minute to transport you 32 meters down to the Marzili neighborhood by the river. Once at the river, I was instantly captivated by the scene: people tubing and floating down the Aare, cooling off on this hot summer day. The Aare is famous for its refreshing water and smooth current, making it popular for “Aare swimming,” an activity that attracts locals and visitors alike. In the warmer months, you’ll see groups of people gently drifting down the river on inflatable tubes, soaking in the sun and the city’s natural beauty. Discovering the Free Parts of the Bern Zoo
As I continued my stroll along the riverside, I passed by the Bern Zoo, which is situated right beside the Aare. One of the unique features of the zoo is that some parts are accessible for free, including various enclosures with native wildlife. Walking along the river path, I was able to spot some of these animals and enjoy a little glimpse of the zoo without an admission ticket.
