Beyond the Old Town: Discovering Bern’s Hidden Gems Along the Aare River and Gurten Mountain

If you’re looking to experience Bern beyond its famous Old Town, a day along the Aare River and up Bern’s local mountain, the Gurten, is an incredible way to enjoy the city’s nature, scenery, and unique vibe. Here’s a recap of my summer day trip in Bern, with tips and some must-see stops along the way!

Arriving at Bern’s Train Station

Bern’s main train station, centrally located and well-connected, made for a quick and convenient arrival. After grabbing a cold drink and some snacks, I set off toward the Marzilibahn to begin my adventure by the river.

Taking the Marzilibahn Down to the Aare

A unique way to reach the Aare River from the higher ground of Bern’s city center is the Marzilibahn, one of the shortest funicular railways in Europe. The Marzilibahn, operational since 1885, takes just over a minute to transport you 32 meters down to the Marzili neighborhood by the river. It’s a charming, historic way to start a day along the Aare, and at CHF 1.50, the ride is both affordable and quick. In summer, the Marzilibahn runs frequently, accommodating visitors and locals who want easy access to the riverfront.

A Stroll Along the Aare

Once at the river, I was instantly captivated by the scene: people tubing and floating down the Aare, cooling off on this hot summer day. The Aare is famous for its refreshing water and smooth current, making it popular for “Aare swimming,” an activity that attracts locals and visitors alike. In the warmer months, you’ll see groups of people gently drifting down the river on inflatable tubes, soaking in the sun and the city’s natural beauty. Along the way, some adventurous swimmers even jump off the bridges, diving into the refreshing river below—a popular local tradition for the bold!

Discovering the Free Parts of the Bern Zoo

As I continued my stroll along the riverside, I passed by the Bern Zoo, which is situated right beside the Aare. One of the unique features of the zoo is that some parts are accessible for free, including various enclosures with native wildlife. Walking along the river path, I was able to spot some of these animals and enjoy a little glimpse of the zoo without an admission ticket. This free-to-visit area is a great bonus for anyone exploring the riverbanks of Bern.

Taking the Gurtenbahn to the Gurten

After a refreshing walk, it was time to get some elevation! I headed over to the Gurtenbahn, the funicular that takes you up Bern’s local mountain, the Gurten. The Gurtenbahn itself is a fun experience and a significant part of Bern’s culture, offering a quick ride to the top of the mountain. Originally opened in 1899, this funicular railway has been modernized over the years and now provides a smooth, scenic journey up 316 meters, allowing for beautiful views of the city, the Aare, and even the distant Alps on clear days.

Enjoying the Gurten

Once at the top of the Gurten, I was rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Bern, stretching across the Aare and the city’s green surroundings. For families and kids, or simply the young at heart, the Gurten has plenty of activities, including a mini train that takes passengers on a scenic loop around the mountaintop. The ride was a delight, providing a relaxing way to see the area and enjoy the greenery.

For a bit more adventure, I hopped on the mountain coaster, a winding track that gives riders an exhilarating way to experience the slopes of the Gurten. Perfect for a burst of adrenaline, this little coaster is a must for those looking to add excitement to their visit.

Returning with Bern’s Public Transport

When it was time to return, I took advantage of Bern’s reliable and efficient public transport system. With trams, buses, and trains covering the city, it’s easy to navigate Bern without a car. Here are some useful tips for using public transport in Bern:

  1. Purchase a Day Pass – If you’re planning to explore multiple areas of Bern, consider a day pass, which gives you unlimited access to trams, buses, and trains within the city’s zones. You can buy tickets at machines, the SBB app, or from most stations.
  2. Use the Swiss Travel Pass – For travelers planning to see other Swiss cities, the Swiss Travel Pass offers unlimited travel on public transport across Switzerland and discounts on funiculars and mountain railways.
  3. Plan with the SBB App – The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) app is invaluable for checking schedules and purchasing tickets. It covers all forms of public transportation in Bern, making it easy to get around efficiently.
  4. Stay Informed About Discounts – The Gurtenbahn and Marzilibahn, for instance, may offer discounts or even free rides for Swiss Travel Pass holders or Bern residents.

A Perfect Day in Bern

This day trip was an excellent way to experience the natural side of Bern, with its lively river culture, lush mountain landscapes, and convenient transport. The Aare and the Gurten give a wonderful sense of the city’s beauty and the locals’ love for outdoor activities. If you’re looking for a relaxed, scenic day in Bern, I highly recommend a similar route!
